Nicola Bacciu

After studying Geography at the University of Exeter, Nicola has pursued her interest in nature and biological recording, as an all-round naturalist, gaining local and national recognition in lichens and fungi. She joined the ecology and biological recording team at Wild Ideas in April 2021, bringing a wealth of identification skill to the team, especially in the area of lower plants.

As Nicola is a little camera-shy, here’s DC’s most maligned eco warrior, Poison Ivy.

Nicola is keen to support more people to love lichens. These incredible species have a fascinating history, with uses as curry flavouring, making antibiotics and perfumes and, of course, by birds and small mammals in nest camouflage. However, the numbers of people studying them are as rare as the most endangered of our lichens.

Nicola is one of our ecology and biodiversity tutors, developing and delivering events and training in Lichenology and Mycology and in Biological Recording.
